Getting to the bottom of the Watchdog's sex offender story
I don't know that it's out of touch. I think Romenesko simply chooses what he wants, just like any other blogger might.
I like his page views, too, when he posts a link to me. But there are many days when I would like to disable his site from the computers in my newsroom because so much of what he focuses on is such a downer...and the journalists take so much of it personally. But I read it and so often shake my head at my own industry.
On the other hand, I just got lectured by a real estate agent for publishing the bad news about national home sales, saying it depressed the local market. I said I understood, but I couldn't not publish bad national news because of its impact on the local market.
I'm one of those high-level editors, I guess. I just wish we would have done a better job preparing for the future back several years ago.
But is what he chooses reflective of the old guard or the new guard, so to speak. Is he focusing on things that the younger generations of journalists are moving past? And should he be more inclusive, considering his reach and position?
I tend to agree that he's a bit negative, but I do think he's pandering to his core readership: old, white and in the so-called media elite.
